Martin County Hospital District built a new 90,000+ square-foot Medical Office Building alongside its Critical Access Hospital campus in Stanton, Texas. Designed by the Vandergriff Group and constructed by MW Builders, the MOB brings additional provider offices and specialty services to a campus that serves all 914 square miles of Martin County.

Railing System: KOTO™ Flatbar
Location: Stanton, TX.
Architect: Vandergriff Group
Contractor: MW Builders

HDI provided the cable railing for the building’s main staircase and upper-level overlook balconies using the KOTO™ Flatbar system with powder coated posts, stainless steel cable infill, and a stainless flat bar cap rail.

Materials and Finish

Posts are Type 304 stainless steel with a custom powder coat, and the cable infill keeps sightlines open between levels. A stainless steel flat bar cap rail runs the length of each section. All stainless components carry a 240-grain brushed finish across the handrail, cable, and cap rail. The finish resists fingerprints and cleans easily, which is a practical advantage in a medical building with constant foot traffic.

Stair and Overlook Installation

The staircase railing uses a weld mount with escutcheon cap, while the overlook balconies use surface-mounted through-bolt deck connections. Two different mounting methods matched to the structural conditions at each location, but the same visual line throughout the building.

At the transitions between stair runs and level guardrails, cable spacing stays even. HDI’s engineering team detailed the post spacing and cable geometry to keep infill code-compliant at every point, including the turns where stair and overlook railings meet.

Second-Level Overlook

The KOTO™ Flatbar cable railing runs the full length of the second-floor overlook, with cable infill that keeps the view open to the lobby below and lets natural light pass through from the upper windows.

The powder coated flat bar posts sit at regular intervals along the balcony edge and pair well with the building’s ceiling grid, wood-tone doors, and light flooring.

Setting the Tone in the Lobby

The completed railing system ties into the MOB’s main lobby, where visitors and patients encounter the staircase immediately upon entry. From the second-floor overlook, the cable infill frames the lobby’s waiting area and seating below while keeping the full volume of the double-height space intact.
