Airbus, an industry-leading manufacturer of commercial aircraft, helicopters, military transports, satellites, and launch vehicles for the aerospace and defense industries, recently opened their A220 production facility in Mobile, Alabama. The final assembly line facility in Mobile, Alabama houses a range of assembly stations where airframe component assemblies are constructed into a completed aircraft. With architectural firm FSB selected to design six of the nine buildings on Airbus’s 232-acre site, FSB turned to HDI Railings for a state-of-the-art railing system for their Airbus Delivery Center.

FSB architects selected HDI for a railing system that would be delivered and installed within a tight lead time as well as support the facilities LEED Silver certification goal. The CIRCUM Round railing system with laminated glass infill was installed along the delivery center’s second story balcony. To clear the balcony slab edge HDI incorporated decorative spacers attached to the structural steel below the slab to side mount the post bases to.
In the staircase ascending from the first to second floors, HDI’s CIRCUM Round railing system was installed with stainless steel midrail, as the infill of choice.
The CIRCUM Round railing system is constructed with mechanical threaded connections to ensure an exact and secure fitting. All railings are fully assembled in HDI’s Pennsylvania factory and then deconstructed into fully assembled sections to ensure efficient installation.
Business is already well underway at the A220 production facility in Mobile, Alabama, with the production of the first U.S built A220 commercial aircraft for their first customer Jet Blue airlines. “The Expansion of our commercial aircraft production in Mobile further solidifies Airbus standing as a truly global aircraft manufacturer and confirms that Airbus is an important part of the American manufacturing landscape,” said Paul Gaskell, Head of A220 Program in Mobile.
