With waiting areas that overlook Lake Superior, Essentia Health-Duluth Clinic 2nd Street Building offers services in diabetes and endocrinology, mental health counseling, and ophthalmology. Located on Essentia Health’s downtown campus, the clinic connects to other buildings via skywalks, ensuring easy access.
Additionally, the beautiful exterior walkways, featuring expertly landscaped greenery, bring nature into the urban environment. The clinic needed railings that could withstand harsh weather, meet safety standards, and seamlessly blend with its modern design.
To address this need on the building’s rooftop, HDI Railings installed the Optik™ Shoe system, which features an aluminum base shoe with a proprietary glass disc-lock system, stainless steel cladding on two sides, and a stainless steel glass-attached structural U-channel.
Additionally, the CIRCUM™ Square railing system with picket infill was implemented, offering a timeless and elegant solution for Essentia’s rooftop.

The KOTO™ system, known for its elegant, simple lines and unseen connections, offers both interior and exterior use. Using 316L-type stainless steel, it provides superior corrosion resistance.
The design includes options for stainless steel or wood top rails and assist rails, with customizable finishes to match any project’s aesthetic needs. The KOTO™ system’s robust construction ensures long-lasting durability and safety, making it an ideal choice for the clinic.

The team selected high-quality 316L stainless steel elements for their durability and sleek appearance. They ensured precise installation, securely side-mounting the railing system and integrating it seamlessly into the existing structure.
In addition to rigorous testing and quality checks, the system also met all safety and performance requirements, offering excellent resistance to corrosion and weathering, and ensuring long-term durability.
