Manhattan, NY

The leading non-profit agency in New York, United Cerebral Palsy of New York City (UCP of NYC) dedicates their time to creating opportunities for people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities. Serving both children and adults, UCP of NY provides personal education, public advocacy, and a community of total inclusion.

UCP of NYC moved their new headquarters to 80 West End Avenue, Manhattan, a spacious and historic 1920’s brick office building. The non-profit organization partnered with architecture firm HOK and general contractor Cauldwell Wingate to create the physical space that would bring their mission to life. The new headquarters will serve as a basecamp for the organization’s dedicated employees and as an elementary school where children, with and without disabilities, learn together.

The first-floor lobby of the UPC of NYC headquarters featured a small staircase and a ramp — side-by-side. Both the stairway and ramp required a world class railing system.

HOK and Cauldwell Wingate had only name in mind when choosing the team to design the railing system: HDI. Together, HDI and Cauldwell Wingate collaborated, selecting and designing the Circum railing system for UCP of NYC. For the railing system infills, they chose stainless steel picket infill rails. Like all HDI installations, Circum in the lobby of UCP of NYC proved a pairing of form and function.

The stainless steel railing system provides a stylistic anchor to an entrance that will welcome hundreds of visitors per day. The picket infill matches the vertical Circum post mounts and the vertical window frames, creating a unified linear aesthetic. Furthermore, the fully steel railing system and infills complement the cool grey and soft white color palate.

On top of that, the Circum will prove to be a durable safety feature for the lifetime of the building. The stainless steel railing system will provide security for everyone who visits the UCP of NYC headquarters and school — regardless of whether they use the stairs or the ramp.

HDI begins all projects with a conversation, ensuring they create the world-class railing to meet their vision.
